500px releases gallery app for iPhone, photographers must upload elsewhere
Many photography lovers consider 500px's photo hosting service to be a Flickr 2.0 of sorts. The snail's pace with which Yahoo has brought new functionality to Flickr has led some users to abandon the once-beloved site in favor of alternatives like 500px, Zenfolio, and SmugMug -- not to mention the vast number of consumers who are now uploading their pictures solely on Facebook.

Are Canon and Nikon killing off their best crop-sensor DSLRs?
Where are all the new high-end crop-sensor DSLRs? Canon rolled out a string of full-frame DSLRs from $2,000 to $7,000 in the past year, along with sub-$1,000 consumer crop-sensor cameras. But its premier crop-sensor model, the Canon EOS 7D (now $1,300 street), is in its fourth year with no replacement in sight. Nikon is in the same boat: new full-frame DSLRs, new sub-$1,000 cameras, but no new high-end crop-sensor offering. Both are selling cheaper products with more features.

If smartphones really are threatening the compact camera market, it stands to reason that the higher-end point-and-shoots will be the last models standing. Canon's had more success than most in this arena, and today is announcing updates to its most capable PowerShot compacts ahead of Photokina. The company promises across-the-board improvements in autofocus performance and shutter lag, and has reshuffled its lineup to give it more focus. There's a lot more difference between the S and G series than in previous years, for example, making the decision on which to buy come down to more than just the figurative or literal size of your pockets.

Canon announces the EOS 6D, a full-frame DSLR with built-in Wi-Fi for $2,099 (hands-on photos)
Nikon threw the photography world for a loop last week by announcing the D600 -- a full-frame DSLR that hits a reasonably affordable price point. Apparently, Canon has its sights on the exact same market, as the company has just introduced the EOS 6D: the lightest, smallest, and least expensive full-frame DSLR the company has ever produced. Canon's latest entry not only compares favorably with the D600, it also provides a compelling alternative to photographers who don't have $3,500 to spare -- but are nonetheless enamored with the 5D Mark III's stacked spec sheet.

Canon's PowerShot line of point-and-shoot cameras received an update this morning, as the company introduced the SX500 IS and the SX160 IS. From the Nikon D1 to the Nikon D4: How DSLRs have improved over the years
Digital SLRs have become so commonplace that it is hard to believe that it has only been a little over a decade since they were introduced to the mainstream market. Nikon's groundbreaking launch of the $5,500 D1 in 1999 marked the first time a pure DSLR was available for retail purchase. Until then Kodak-modified Nikon and Canon SLRs were primarily aimed at photojournalists and specialized commercial applications

Fujitsu develops eye tracking technology
Fujitsu Laboratories today announced development of eye tracking technology that takes advantage of compact, inexpensive cameras and light-emitting diodes (LED) embedded in PCs. Up until now, tracking eye movements required a specialized camera and LED, the prohibitive cost and size of which made it difficult to use in PCs and other general-purpose products. Moreover, less expensive equipment was of insufficient quality, and blurred images meant poor detection accuracy. Now, however, using a near-infrared LED and the type of compact, inexpensive camera that comes as a standard feature in many PCs, Fujitsu Laboratories has developed image processing technology that can overcome blurred images to accurately detect the pupil of the eye. As a result, an eye tracking device can be embedded into the frame of a PC screen without detracting from the PC's design, enabling a new and natural non-contact PC interface in which, for example, screen zooming and scrolling based on where one is looking are possible.

How to change your DSLR lens the right way
A lot of digital SLR owners tell me that they rarely change their camera's lens--not because they don't own several, but because they're worried about getting dust or dirt in the camera. Nikon releases Android-powered CoolPix S800c
Android cameras are not a new concept, but for Nikon they are. The company today announced release of its first Android-powered camera, the CoolPix S800c. Rather than Jelly Bean, the shooter relies on much older Android 2.3 Gingerbread. So Polaroid got there faster, but that didn't stop Nikon from releasing the $349.95 camera.

Nokia camera chief: 'PureView is not a single specific feature or specification'
Nokia's big launch event tomorrow is expected to feature the brand new Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 handset, which should come with PureView branding, just like the 808 PureView. Unlike its Symbian brandmate, however, the Lumia 920 is not anticipated to feature an enormous 41-megapixel sensor, raising some questions about what the PureView brand on the new phone will actually mean. In a series of tweets this week, Damian Dinning, Nokia's man in charge of cameras, has explained that PureView is about the overall camera performance, including optics, software, and image processing, and not the simple megapixel count.

Samsung unveils the Galaxy Camera: Does Android belong in your point-and-shoot?
Today Samsung joined Nikon in announcing an Android-powered camera. Sony A99 Review: At Long Last a Real Flagship DSLR From Sony
Sony cameras have come a long way over the last few years--to the point that they're competitive with the twin monoliths of Canon and Nikon. The company has accomplished this feat by making gear that's different from other stuff out there. Until now, that success has been limited to point-and-shoots like the RX100 and the fabulous NEX cameras. Here's a big, pricey professional flagship to match Sony's successes at lower price points.

Sony A99 specs revealed: the first full-frame SLT camera comes into focus
Sony's latest SLT (Single-Lens Translucent) camera, the A99, has been detailed by two prominent camera blogs. Both Sony Alpha Rumors and Photo Rumors have posted a spec sheet for the high-end camera, revealing a 24.3-megapixel full-frame sensor, an ISO range of 100-25,600, 1/8000 maximum shutter speed, 10fps continuous shooting, 14-bit RAW output, and a 102-point AF system.

Sony Alpha SLT-A57 - Review
The 16.1 megapixel Sony SLT A57 digital SLT camera is aimed at a very discerning camera buyer: Goldilocks. Papa Bear might prefer the bigger, more complicated and more expensive A77; Mama Bear might pick the lighter entry-level A37, but if Goldilocks is the photographer I think she is, she's going to think the A57 is just right. And so may you.

Sony Announces New Tiny Mirrorless Camera, the NEX-5R
Sony makes some of the best tiny interchangeable-lens cameras (ILCs) in the game, but ILCs have had issues in the past with autofocus on a technical level, due to the smaller sensors. The new NEX-5R, the follow-up to the excellent NEX-5N, has 99 phase-detection autofocus sensors, so it can autofocus like a champ. Plus it's got a 180-degree swiveling screen and Wi-Fi, plus the promise of lots of cool apps from Sony.

Sony announces NEX-5R mirrorless camera with Wi-Fi, better focus, and more controls
Sony's mirrorless cameras get better and better, and now they're good enough that the company says it's taking aim at your DSLR. Sony just announced the NEX-5R at IFA in Berlin, and the successor to the NEX-5N has a few key new additions. There's finally a physical control dial on the 16.1-megapixel camera, so you can flip through settings much more easily. There's also a new Function button that makes the scroll wheel even more versatile.

Sony NEX-5R and NEX-6 mirrorless cameras with Wi-Fi rumored for September launch
Sony's Q1 financial results made for predictably depressing reading yesterday, but one of the few positives was the imaging division's strong performance boosted by sales of interchangeable lens cameras. The popular mirrorless NEX range is at the forefront of Sony's drive to become a major photography player, so it's no surprise to hear word of new models coming up soon -- the often reliable Sony Alpha Rumors says that the NEX-5R and NEX-6 are both set to be announced in September ahead of Photokina.

Sony SLT-A99: Can Sony's full-frame DSLR go head-to-head with Nikon and Canon?
Sony has been clawing its way towards the front of the pack when it comes to high-end cameras. It has made a large step forward with the introduction of the SLT-A99. While replacing the A900 as the full-frame camera in Sony's lineup, the A99 is a radically different beast. At 24 megapixels and 6-8 fps, it is dramatically faster than the A900. It also omits the movable mirror and optical viewfinder found in DSLRs, moving to a full-time electronic viewfinder (EVF) and Sony's SLT (Single Lens Translucent) technology.

Why the Samsung Galaxy Camera makes perfect sense
While much of the buzz leading up to last Wednesday's Samsung Mobile Unpacked event focused on the Galaxy Note 2, it could be argued that the real star of the show was the Galaxy Camera, Sammy's new Android-powered point-and-shoot. Sure, the Note 2 is an impressive piece of kit, but it is essentially an incremental upgrade of a device we already know. The Galaxy Camera, on the other hand, could represent the future of point-and-shoots, or an entirely new class of product altogether.

Sony Alpha SLT-A77 - Review
With the release of the Sony Alpha SLT-A55 and SLT-A33 in late 2010, Sony created a new category of camera, similar to a conventional digital SLR in many respects (same sensor size, lens mounts, general form factor) but with an ingenious technical twist in the way it uses the camera's internal mirror. The A55 and A33 were bleeding-edge products whose novelty was impressive enough to overshadow some of their usability shortcomings. With the release of the Alpha SLT-A77, however, Sony has almost fully realized the promise of the earlier cameras.

Sony RX1 Review: A Camera So Bold, So Beautiful... and So Expensive
There are two terms in digital photography that signify two very different kinds of cameras. The terms are compact, and full-frame. With the RX1, Sony fused these two polar opposites in a collision of photo-epic proportions.

It's hard to shoot pictures in the dark. You typically have the choice of either taking a blurry, dim photo, or using a flash and ruining the ambiance. But what if you could get the same quality pictures in low light with a camera that is significantly smaller?

But don't let the surging megapixel count and plummeting price tag fool you. We just took the camera for a test drive in some less than ideal conditions, and we were impressed.
