Hands on with Sony's QX10 lens camera

Hands on: Sony's new QX10 and QX100 turn any iPhone, Android phone into a Cyber-shot camera
The quality of images captured with smartphone cameras improves dramatically with each new generation of devices. In fact, we're getting to the point where photos taken with top of the line smartphone cameras like the Lumia 1020 and iPhone 5, and pictures captured by basic dedicated point-and-shoot cameras are nearly indistinguishable. But right now there's only so much that camera sensor and optics makers can do in the small amount of space available in today's razor-thin smartphones.

Leaked Sony ad for QX10 and QX100 lens cameras turns your life into quirky indie movie
Sony still hasn't announced its QX10 and QX100 lens cameras, but the flood of leaks just isn't slowing down. An official video ad for the QX10 and X100 has now surfaced on the web, offering the best glimpse yet at how Sony envisions consumers using these unique products. In the clip, we see that linking the QX10 and QX100 with a smartphone will be a simple, one-touch process -- at least with Sony's own Xperia hardware -- and you'll be using the PlayMemories app to control each lens.

Manual reveals how Sony's rumored 'lens cameras' will actually work
Sony's new "lens cameras," wireless accessories that clip onto your smartphone and turn it into a high-quality point-and-shoot camera, have been detailed again, this time through a leaked manual. Sony Alpha Rumors (SAR) has previously leaked photos of the devices, and is back now with a lot more detail. Diagrams taken from the manual show that the lens cameras won't leave all the controls down to the smartphone they're attached to.

Sony QX100: A Fancy, Freaky Lens-Camera That Feeds Off Your Smartphone
Sony has been doing wonderful things with imaging in recent years, but despite redefining what we can expect from a compact point-and-shoot camera, the company has yet to make a definitive statement in the mobile imaging you do with your smartphone. The QX100 appears to be that statement--and boy is it weird looking.

Sony's Cyber-shot QX100 lens camera is fantastic, impractical
At Sony's IFA press event, reps handed out samples of the company's $250 lens cameras to everyone in the room. We really enjoyed our time with the Cyber-shot QX10, but that model's more powerful sibling, the QX100, promised even better performance, albeit in a substantially larger package. Unfortunately, it's been a bit difficult to come by, and our loaner missed the deadline for a review. We'll examine it here instead.

Tiny Camera Records Details of Scene Without Losing Sight of the Big Picture
To capture all the details of a crime scene, you might take many photos at close range. To get the whole scene at once, you could use a wide-angle or fisheye lens; but without an especially large lens you would be sacrificing the fine resolution that would help you catch that partial footprint you might otherwise have missed. Now a new type of miniature camera system promises to give users a big picture view without sacrificing high-resolution.

Experimental 3D scanner creates clear images with almost no light
We've seen single-pixel cameras, and now MIT researchers have figured out how to create clear images of dimly-lit objects using single photons -- in 3D, no less. The technique doesn't involve any fancy new hardware, either, as the team worked with a standard photon detector that fired low-intensity visible laser light pulses. The magic happens from the algorithms they developed instead, which can pick out variations in the time it takes for individual photons to bounce off of subjects.

Kodak officially exits bankruptcy, emerges as a commercial printing company
As expected, former camera-making company Kodak has climbed out of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy it entered in January of 2012. In a press release, the company says it finished its restructuring today, canceling its old stock and giving creditors a new set of shares. It's the culmination of nearly two years of planning, as Kodak steadily sold off assets and pared down its workforce to emerge as a tightly focused business that had lost its best-known segment: the consumer camera business that it started phasing out early last year. Kodak's website appears to still be in transition, showing the image above.

New camera sensor borrows human retina tech to capture images at 1000+ FPS
Acquiring images as a succession of frames is one way to get the job done, but it is not the best way. One problem with this approach is that each pixel of a sensor is exposed for the same amount of time, which makes it hard to simultaneously capture bright and dark regions of a scene. IniLabs, a spinoff from the Neuroinformatics Institute at the University of Zurich, has developed a new sensor, known as the VS128 DVS, which eliminates many of the limitations of conventional cameras.

Smartphones may be the most popular devices for taking pictures nowadays, but there is still a place for dedicated cameras, which continue to offer superior image quality. Nikon's new full-frame camera leaks out with glorious retro styling
The Alpha 7 cameras that Sony introduced last month were astounding because of their combination of compact size, a full-frame sensor, and interchangeable lenses. Though GoPro also offers a wearable camera with 4K shooting, it can only record at 15 frames per second, which isn't fast enough to capture nearly as smooth of an image.

Sony adding proper 1080p video recording, other improvements to QX lens cameras
In January, Sony plans to roll out new firmware and software updates for its pair of QX "lens cameras" that address several of their early shortcomings. First, both the QX100 and QX10 will be able to shoot proper Full HD video at 1080p (previously they'd been limited to an odd 1440 x 1080 resolution). Sony is also kicking up the max ISO settings on both models. The QX10 will now shoot up to ISO 3200, with the QX100 getting you all the way up to ISO 12800 -- though we can't imagine you'll see great results when venturing into that territory.

Sony targets Nikon and Canon users with rumored 'shift sensor' camera
One advantage of mirrorless cameras for enthusiasts is the ease at which other system's lenses can be adapted, but this tends to bring the loss of autofocus -- if the lens had autofocus in the first place. But according to the latest leak from Sony Alpha Rumors (see update), an innovative solution may be on the way. The alleged Sony A7000 is said to feature a "Z-shift sensor" that can move up to 18mm in order to bring images in focus, no matter what lens is attached. Fuji's new top-of-the-line mirrorless camera is packed with functionality, aiming to smash through the shortcomings of i's popular but imperfect X series line. The X-T1 has plenty of power, but can't help tripping over its own feet.

Micro cameras flex their way into the future of imaging

Nikon Df: Retro DSLR packed with full-frame performance
With its new Df DSLR, Nikon has become the latest camera maker to embrace a retro-styled model to try and jumpstart dwindling camera sales. The Nikon Df, harkening back to Nikon's flagship "F"-Series" pro SLRs is now available for pre-order, and the specs are head-turning. Instead of being merely a cool looking piece of "camera porn", the Df is packed with the top-of-the-line 16.2MP full-frame sensor from the much more expensive Nikon D4, and cranks along at a very respectable 5.5fps -- although its total lack of video will remind you that this beauty isn't for everyone.

While the article is in Chinese, you can discern easy enough from Bing translator that they are impressed with the upcoming phone.

Nikon D3300: Hands-on with Nikon's DSLR answer to the growing mirrorless trend
For a while now, the technology spotlight for cameras has focused on mirrorless advances and smartphones. While high-end DSLRs have continued to make improvements, entry-level models that provide most DSLR sales have struggled to compete with the impressive line-ups of smaller mirrorless models like the Sony NEX product family. With the D3300, Nikon has put its decades of experience in camera design to good use in creating a model that is smaller and better than previous entry-level DSLRs, but at the same time making it easier to handle and use.

Sony RX1 Review: A Camera So Bold, So Beautiful... and So Expensive
There are two terms in digital photography that signify two very different kinds of cameras. The terms are compact, and full-frame. The former defines those cheap, pocketable point-and-shoots, while the latter is a feature only found on the most professional DSLRs. With the RX1, Sony fused these two polar opposites in a collision of photo-epic proportions.

Sony RX10 features 1-inch 20.2MP sensor, 24-200mm constant f/2.8 lens for $1,300
Sony's growing its successful RX Cyber-shot lineup with an entirely new type of camera. The RX10 packs the same 20.2-megapixel 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor as the RX100 Mark II, and based on our experience shooting with that model, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect excellent image quality with this cam as well. What makes this model unique, however, is the 24-200mm Zeiss lens, which offers a constant f/2.8 aperture, enabling identical exposures at both ends of the zoom spectrum. I

Up close and personal with Sony's awesome compact camera, the RX10
Sony's RX10 is a new kind of point-and-shoot camera. It has a big sensor and a fast lens with huge zoom, and it's able to take pictures in almost any situation. But it's made to be easy to learn and understand, so that all you have to do is pick it up, turn it on, and start taking pictures.
